See What Our Students Have Said About the Hendrix Masterclass

John K

I thought I knew Hendrix, but this masterclass showed me just how much more there was to learn. We all know Hendrix relied heavily on the major and minor scales, but with this course I was able to get a proper understanding of how to apply them the way he did, and it changed my playing practically overnight.

What You’ll Find Inside The Course

Part 1: Bending & Vibrato Mini-Course

The course kicks off by walking you through the fundamentals of expression on the guitar - bending and vibrato. Here you’ll discover the mechanics along with the different types of bends and exercises you can follow to quickly get up to speed on this technique. After that, you’ll learn why vibrato is important, and exercises for creating your own personal vibrato.

1: Course Introduction - welcome to the course!

2: Bending Technique - Gabriel demonstrates different bending techniques, along with the mechanics of executing a proper bend and showing different types of bends you can do (half stop, whole stop, overbend, etc.).

3: Bending Exercises - here Gabriel walks you through a series of exercises you can use in your practice routine to nail your bending technique, pull off clean bends in your playing, avoiding things like bending out of tune, bending too fast, etc.

4: Vibrato Technique - moving on to vibrato, Gabriel walks you through different types of vibrato, talks about the vibrato different players have, why vibrato is important (namely that it gives a player their unique personality on the guitar), as well as demonstrating types of vibrato (fast/slow/wide/narrow/etc.).

5: Vibrato Exercises - next a series of exercises that you can add to your own practice routine to get good smooth vibrato that is in time with the music.

6: Final Thoughts - this contains an overview of what you've learned along with suggestions on what to learn next!

Part 2: Double Stops Mini-Course

In this section you’ll learn how to create unique and iconic sounds by playing two notes at the same time. You’ll learn the common double stop notes (Gab teaches it in c minor scale), how to incorporate it into the pentatonic scale, and how to use triads in double stops. The session closes with Gab sharing his best tips to make this complicated system easy to learn.

1: Introduction - welcome to the course!.

2: What is a Double Stop - For those who are new to the idea of double stops, we give you a ground floor explanation and demonstration of this technique.

3: What notes can be used in Double Stops - Double stops can be performed in any scale, but Gabriel walks you through most common double stops - thirds, fourths, fifths and octaves. Gab uses the C minor scale to demonstrate each of the most common ones, played through the whole scale.

4: Incorporating Double Stops with the Pentatonic Scale - double stops are most commonly played using the pentatonic scale, so Gabriel walks you through how you would do this in your playing, basically giving you a practical roadmap for how to easily incorporate double stops in your playing. Then a little minor pentatonic jam plays, demonstrating this technique.

5: Incorporating Double Stops using Triads - Another technique for finding good double stop ideas within a key or within a solo. Triads are three notes, so if you know your triads, you have two choices within each triad (1/2, 1/3). Gab reveals all!

6: Technique Tips For Playing Double Stops - Walking through techniques to embellish your double stops and make them more vibey. Walks through regular picking (downstrokes or alternate picking), hybrid picking (combining picking and fingers), fingerpicking, slides, and legato.

7: Final Thoughts - a review of everything you learned in this section, along with some suggestions on next steps.

Part 3: Hendrix Rhythm Style Course

In this next section you’ll go deep on the different element's of Hendrix's unique approach to rhythm guitar - one of the biggest trademarks of his sound. We cover everything from his famous thumb voicings, the funk and soul elements to his strumming and of course the Hendrix chord!

1: Introduction - welcome to the course!

2: The Hendrix Chord - This is where it all starts! Gabriel walks you through the signature chord heard in songs like Foxy Lady, Hey Joe, Manic Depression and many more.

3: Funky Grooves - So much of what made Hendrix stand out among rock guitarists of the time is the amount of funk and groove he brought to his rhythm playing, a holdover from his time on the chitlin' circuit with the Isley Brothers and Little Richard. Gabriel shows you some of the right and left hand techniques you can use to add some of these grooves to both your rhythm playing and your solos.

4: Open String Ideas - Next, Gabriel uses the E minor pentatonic scale to demonstrate how Hendrix would incorporate open strings into his lead lines, and even gives you a few licks that you can incorporate into your own playing to get some of this flavor.

5: Thumb Voicing - One of the techniques that allowed Hendrix to add so much flavor to his rhythm playing (and make his three piece band sound even bigger) was playing the bass note with this thumb, leaving his other fingers free to add more complex voicings and embellishments to his rhythm playing. In this lesson you'll learn the practicalities behind this and some of the embellishments available to you when you use this technique.

6: Jimi's Double Take - here Gabriel walks you through a technique highlighted in songs like Little Wing and Castles Made Of Sand, whereby Hendrix combined double stops and hammer ons to create his signature double take technique - one of his most recognizable calling cards, and one that sits well in anyone's bag of tricks!

7: Course Conclusion - thanks for watching!

Part 4: Hendrix Masterclass Techniques & Scales

This is where you combine all the techniques you learned to unlock the Axis Mastery Scale. You’ll learn the scales Jimi used, how to switch between them, as well as some of his trademark solo moves like trills, bends and vibrato (aka his "cosmic overdrive" sound), his "electric surf" modulations, as well as the effects he used to get his far out tones. The course ends with a quick wrap up before diving into the two Hendrix solos you’ll learn so you can tie everything together and start soloing with confidence!

1: Course Introduction - welcome to the course!.

2: The Axis Mastery Scale - here Gab walks through how Hendrix combined several different scales to create his own scale known as "The Axis Mastery Scale". Gab teaches each scale involved, how to practice them together to see them as one scale, and how to switch between them to get that Hendrix sound.

3: Cosmic Overdrive - Jimi's solo work was known for the variety of bends and overbends he used to add both aggression but also a psychadelic edge to his sound, and in this lesson Gabriel walks through all of them - from unison bends, to oblique bends, to double stop bends, to overbends and more! After this module, you'll have a bag full of bendy tricks!

4: Hendrix Trills - Many times when we think of Jimi's lead work, we think of his trills, an old blues technique combining hammer ons and pull offs that Jimi took and made his own. Gabriel walks through how to pull off a clean trill, and demonstrates how Hendrix used them in both his lead lines (such as Voodoo Chile) and his solos.

5: Electric Surf - Another technique that made Hendrix's playing sound super psychedelic was his use of the tremolo bar on his guitar, played in an agressive back and forth motion while doused in fuzz - aka "electric surf". In this module, Gabriel shows how to use this to add a distinctive dynamic quality to your solos.

6: Voodoo Vignettes - Here Gabriel goes deep on how Hendrix used legato one-string riffs and tremolo picked on-string riffs that move horizontally across the fretboard. These require a lot of accuracy and finger control to pull off, so Gabriel teaches some techniques to make sure you pull these off cleanly.

7: Hendrix Effects - Gabriel demonstrates how Hendrix used different combinations of only four pedals - the wah, uni-vibe, fuzz and octavia - to create a variety of signature tones.

8: Course Conclusion - Thanks!
